Parental / Family Involvement – “What Works”

Parents / Guardians are encouraged to take part in numerous events through out the school year.  The district wide Connect Ed call out system, along with memos given to students to take home, gives schools ample opportunities to deliver information, invite parents / families to several school sponsored events.  Please make every opportunity to be part of our school community.  We value your time and participation, as do your children!

Parent / Families volunteer their time at:

1st day celebration
Walk for Breast Cancer Cure
Harvest Fest
Townie Pride Parade
Robotics Competitions
Ski / Snowboard trips
Golf Tourney
Numerous Field Trips

Box Top Collection
Book Fair
Skate Nights
Sporting Events
Band / Choral Concerts
Spring Fair
Honors Night
Adventure Bound overnight trip

  Parent Center:

Over the past years our building has become parent friendly through the liquidation of information pertaining to local programs offered to parents and their families. This includes agencies such as the Girls & Boys Club, RIPIN, East Providence Public Libraries, etc.  District level memos pertaining to various issues are also available.

Currently, our vestibule has comfortable seating for all parents and we have a table with various pamphlets for families to take as they please.

  Friendly Entrances:

We have a warm entrance into the building with seating and information as was stated above.  Visitors will notice that the only entrance will be into the Main Office. For security reasons, the vestibule doors are locked to direct all traffic into Main Office area.  Parents / visitors will be greeted by one of two secretaries located in the Main Office.  A majority of parents that routinely enter the main office build a trusting relationship with the secretaries because of their outgoing demeanor.

  Parent Parking:

Parent parking was designated in our first year as the current Administrative Team.  We currently have at least 6 available parking spaces for parents on a daily basis.  We also developed a drop off / pick up system to ensure students safely arrive / leave the school grounds, with nearly 200 vehicles converging at the site during arrival / dismissal.

  “FFF” -- Family, Food, Fun

Numerous opportunities have been provided to parents / families over the past four years here at Martin, mainly through the efforts of the school staff and our Parent / Teacher Organization (PTO).

Events that were not previously mentioned in the ‘Volunteer’ section include:

Ice Cream Socials
May Breakfast
Talent Shows
Math Nights
Science Fair Exhibitions
Light the Night Walk
Katrina Relief Pasta Dinner
Parent Workshop w/ Day One
Internet Safety Workshop
Teacher Appreciation Week
Parent Orientation Night
5K Run / Walk

  “How-to's” for parents:

Through our bi-monthly distribution of the Wildcat Communicator, information guiding parent / families with school expectations are frequently posted.  We will also distribute a pamphlet to all entering 6th Grade parents at the Orientation in May.

  Communication Strategies:

The system wide Connect Ed call out program is the best example of how the entire district has made the effort to reach out to parents / families.  At the building level, we also have had the Wildcat Communicator distributed to students, as well as, posted on the school’s website.  Teams are strongly urged to utilize the website’s homework hotline.  At the ground level, teachers will utilize student planners to keep an open line of communication with home and school.

  Technology Strategies for Parents:

We urge our parents to use the school website to attain information, but hard copies are available for those unable to use computer. Nearly 1/3 of our students surveyed did not have computer capabilities in their homes, therefore it is of utmost need that many students have access to school computers to do research for school assignments, etc.

We are looking forward to a great year;

Sincerely,
Glenn J. Piros
